Dependency and skill atrophy
Convenience can quietly erase the muscles you still need.
The trap
If every first draft, every email, and every decision sketch goes to a model, your taste and speed at those tasks can fade. Convenience feels like progress until the network is down or the model is wrong in a way only a practiced human would notice.
What this means at work
Use AI as a sparring partner, not a substitute for the skills that make you valuable when the tool fails. Skill atrophy is quiet: you still ship, you just cannot explain or rebuild.
Practice (15 minutes)
- Pick one task you always hand to a model (outline, email, code stub).
- Do a closed-book version for 12 minutes: no chat, no autocomplete if you can help it.
- Only then open the model for critique, not a full rewrite.
- Log one sentence: what muscle felt weak?
Reflection
Which skill would embarrass you if you had to demo it live without AI?
